Longevity of Fragrances depends on various conditions which include:
BODY CHEMISTRY
Body chemistry is extensively impactful on how the fragrance smells on one person.
And the longevity and how stable the fragrance will be depends on how much hygienic and healthy you are.
Your own body chemistry affects how different notes smell on your skin. Anything that affects the “natural” smell of your skin, such as stress, hormonal changes, your current diet or medications, might change how a perfume smells on you.
Each person smells distinct and unique. That’s the reason, a signature scent can be closely tied to personhood and to the way we hope to express our sense of identity to the world.
CLOTHING
Fragrances will last more on your clothes (compared to skin) for an entire day, and sometimes longer than a week.
Cotton seems to hold scent better than any other clothing material.
CLIMATE
ClimateĀ has a huge impact on how the scent of perfume is perceived.
Hot weather intensifies the notes while cold weather makes it harder for them to evaporate.
The right fragrance will enhance this feeling. Perfume notes that go best with sunny, warm weather are light, crisp, and fresh.
And the notes that go best with the crisp, cool days are woody, oriental and leathery.
Attars are concentrated form whereas the Perfumes are diluted with solvents such as alcohol.
It is observed that Attars has a better longevity whereas, a Perfume has better throw in air when applied for few hours.
Attars seem more long-lasting as they stick easily on your skin for minimum 4-6 hours, depending on the blend of fragrances. Thatās because they are in a base of oil, which sticks to wherever you apply it. They are activated by the heat of your skin, so they radiate outward as your skin heats up. Thatās why you apply them to your pulse points, and the fragrance can be smelled when someone passes by you or comes close.
Perfumes spray into the air. When the solvent (alcohol) lands, it touches down on your clothes, and skin, and the rest dissipates in a cloud of fragrance behind you. As you wear it, the alcohol continues to have throw as the alcohol dissipates into the air. This means that your boss, coworkers, and the people around you can smell your perfume before they are close enough to have a conversation with you.
Although Perfume seem āstrongā or project more at first, they evaporate into the air easily. Such is the nature of alcohol. When combined with oxygen, it dissipates.
Top notes provide the first scent impression of a fragrance once it has been applied. They are usually lighter, more volatile aromas that evaporate readily. Their scent usually lingers for between 5 and 30 minutes.
Middle notes, sometimes referred to as āheart notesā, make up the body of the blend. They may be evident from the start, but will usually take 10-30 minutes to fully develop on the skin. They are the notes that classify the fragrance family (floral, oriental, chypre, etc, see below).
Base NotesĀ are those with the greatest molecular weight. They last the longest, and are also important as fixatives, that is, they help slow down the evaporation rates of the lighter notes, giving the fragrance holding power. Common base notes include oakmoss, patchouli, woods, musk and vanilla.
A fragrance which does not have traditional top, middle and base notes is usually described as “linear”
These terms refer to the strength of the fragrance, or more specifically, to how much high solvent has been added to the fragrance oils.
Eau de ParfumĀ (15 – 20% perfume oil)
Extrait de Parfum (25 – 30% perfume oil)
Mostly it’s observed that Eau de Parfum has a greater projection due to high solvent whereas, Extrait de Parfum has a better longevity (compared to EDP) due to higher concentration of fragrance oils.
